Své zážitky zpracoval v cestopisech (Bitter Lemons, 1957, Bitter Lemons of Cyprus, 2001 - Hořké citróny). V expresionisticky pojatých románech (pův. tetralogie The Alexandria Quartet - Alexandrijský kvartet, 1957-60, Justine, 1957; Balthazar, 1958; Mountolive, 1958; Clea, 1960) a imaginativně bohaté reflexívní poezii (A Private Country Soukromá krajina, The Tree of Idleness - Strom nečinnosti) filoz. a psychol. analyzuje problémy vztahu člověka ke světu.
